Sure-Seal Cool Gray EPDM: A New Shade of Performance

Roof membrane color plays a crucial role in a building’s energy performance. In cooling-dominant southern climates, black membranes can increase energy costs, while in heating-dominant northern climates, white membranes can do the same. With energy codes requiring minimum Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) values in ASHRAE Zones 0 to 3, designers in moderate zones (4 and 5) are often forced to choose between two imperfect options. This dilemma is especially relevant for contractors and designers who prefer EPDM’s long-term performance, resiliency, and workability—qualities that have historically only been available in black or white colors. As a result, many have turned to alternative materials simply to access a more neutral color option.

Carlisle’s new Sure-Seal® Cool Gray EPDM bridges this gap by offering a balanced solution for mixed climates. It combines the reflectivity of lighter membranes with the thermal benefits of darker ones, without sacrificing the trusted benefits of EPDM.

Sure-Seal Cool Gray EPDM delivers:
  • Initial SRI of 55 and three-year aged SRI of 47, providing solar reflectance while retaining enough warmth in winter to promote “dry-down” and reduce condensation.
  • The same long-term performance, flexibility, and workability that contractors rely on.
  • Medium gray color has less glare, dries the roof faster, and hides dirt pickup better than white membranes.
  • A 60-mil, non-reinforced sheet designed for adhered applications, with or without 3" Factory-Applied Tape™ (FAT).
  • Standard 10’ widths in lengths up to 100’, made in the USA.
  • A full line of color-matched pressure-sensitive accessories—cover strips, pipe seals, walkway pads, T-joint covers, and more—for a clean, cohesive finish.
Sure-Seal Cool Gray EPDM is UL Listed, FM Approved, and available with warranties of up to 25 years.

For your next roofing project in a mixed or mild climate, don’t compromise on performance or color. Carlisle’s Sure-Seal Cool Gray EPDM is the smart, balanced solution that delivers energy efficiency, aesthetic versatility, and the proven durability of EPDM.
